New buildings for Likpe-Kukurantumi schools

Three new school blocks have been inaugurated at Likpe-Kukurantumi in the Hohoe Municipality to serve as the kindergarten of the Evangelical Presbyterian (E.P) and Catholic Church, as well as the upper primary of the Catholic Church.

The school blocks were constructed under a community partnership agreement with an international Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Pencils of Promise (POP), in collaboration with a local NGO, Disaster Volunteers of Ghana (DIVOG), and a Dutch philanthropist, Miss Louise Dorge.

  Record time of construction
The community supported the project with communal labour and provided sand, stones and artisanal skills and the partners provided relevant building materials, including cement, roofing sheets, nails and paint, among others, for the projects to be completed in a record time of 92 days.

In an inaugural address, the Hohoe Municipal Chief Executive, Dr Margaret Kweku, lauded the collaboration among the stakeholders to support the government’s efforts to enhance quality education delivery.

  Pencils of Promise
The Country Director of POP, Mr Freeman Gobah, said the completion of the two projects in one community was a record for the NGO which started in 2008 in the United States of America and extended to Ghana in 2012. He added that the NGO also operated in Guatemala, Laos and Nicaragua.

According to him, POP had worked in 40 communities in the country within two years and executed 16 projects so far. He indicated that it would soon start a teacher retraining programme, as well as water and sanitation and scholarship programmes for brilliant, needy students and pupils.

Miss Dorge commended the community for the high level of coexistence among Catholics, Protestants and Muslims in the town. She added that the cooperation was a good sign of hope for the future.

The Deputy Director in charge of supervision at the municipal office of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Mr J.W.K Fiebor, urged School Management Committees (SMCs) and Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) of schools to play their roles effectively in order to address problems confronting schools.
