Man Gets 20 Years For Raping Mental Patient

Akwasi Kumi, a driver’s mate, was convicted by the court in Kumasi after pleading guilty to the charge of defilement, contrary to Section 101(2) of Act 29/60 as amended by section 11 of Act 554/98.

He was arrested on April 9, 2014 in his room at Atonsu-Bokro Last Stop after a report had been made to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit of the Ghana Police Service at Asokwa.

The prosecutor, Chief Inspector Rose Essuman, told the court presided over by Rita Agyeman-Budu that the complainant, Bismarck Fosu, is a commercial driver and brother of the 15-year-old victim, while the convict is his (driver’s) mate.

On April 8, 2014 at about 7:30 pm, prosecution disclosed that the convict came across the victim around the Atonsu Presbyterian School and lured her into his room.

Chief Inspector Rose Essuman disclosed that convict Akwasi Kumi caressed the victim and subsequently inserted his fingers into her vagina before he forcibly had sexual intercourse with the mentally retarded girl.

The prosecutor asserted that Akwasi, after the rude act, pushed the girl out of the room, locked himself up and slept, leaving the poor teenager to her fate.

According to the prosecutor, relatives of the victim found her under a certain tree at Atonsu S-line the following day upon a search and took her home.

She said the victim narrated her ordeal to members of her family during interrogation.

A report was later made to the police leading to the arrest of Kumi who was then relaxing in his room. A police medical form was then issued to the victim to seek medical attention.

The convict admitted the offence of defilement in his caution statement to the police, and after investigations, Kumi was arraigned before court for prosecution.
