Nigeria to host symposium for women

The second Women: Inspiration and Enterprise (WIE) Africa symposium will commence at the Intercontinental Hotel in Lagos, Nigeria on Saturday May 3 to coincide with the World Economic Forum Africa.

The programme, to be attended by a group of leading African women, is being hosted by WIE founder, Dee Poku; alongside philanthropist Toyin Saraki; business leader Bola Adesola; media mogul Mo Abudu; fashion designer Folake Folarin-Coker; and national TV icon, Julie Gichuru.

It will bring together some of Africa’s most influential women, including female leaders from around the world, comprising those in politics, business, the media, fashion, entertainment and arts, as well as philanthropists who will gather to discuss issues pertaining to empowering and inspiring the next generation.

Speakers include Nigerian’s first female billionaire, Folorunso Alakija, who will speak in a spotlight session to share her experience on leadership with participants; CNN news anchor, Isha Sesay; Global Beauty Ambassador, Eryka Freemantle; Supermodel and Africa’s Next Top Model  host, Oluchi Orlandi; celebrated Nigerian singer cum song writer, Tiwa Savage; and Half of a Yellow Sun actress, Onyeka Onwenu.

Topics for discussion include: “Retail Ready: Developing African Labels Into Viable Businesses”; “A Question of Identity: Challenging the Global Perception of Beauty”;  and “Pioneering Platforms: Creating and Sustaining Media in Africa”.

Dee Poku, Co-founder and CEO of WIE, said “Following the success of last year’s inaugural event in Cape Town, I am excited that WIE Africa is being held in Nigeria as there are very few events that convene a pan-African grouping of Africa’s incredibly high-calibre women leaders.”

“I’m confident that this will be more than a one-day conference but an opportunity to look at how Africa’s talents can be at the forefront of development on the continent, as well as having a global impact which is what WIE Africa is all about,” she said.

Founded in 2010, WIE Africa symposium is a global annual conference designed to empower the next generation of women leaders. WIE Africa will showcase the women taking a central role in shaping the Africa of tomorrow and aims to contribute to changing any negative perceptions of Africa as a whole by presenting successful and innovative African women.
