Asantehene Hits The Greens Today

The Royal Golf Club in Kumasi will receive a royal touch with the majestic presence of the King of Ashanti, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who will perform the opening ceremony of the 57th MTN Otumfuo Gold Cup at the course today.

Club Captain Martin Poku revealed that the official opening ceremony would be characterized by a flag-hoisting ceremony this morning.

Otumfuo, in whose honour the six-day event is being organized, will return to the course tomorrow to perform the official tee-off at 6.30 am.

The pros, who started last Tuesday, will end their segment today, with Group B players taking over in an 18-hole encounter.

Scratch and Group ‘A’ players will have their turn tomorrow and Sunday when Asantehene would be expected to perform the closing ceremony, which is usually accompanied by a colourful flag lowering ceremony.

Mr Poku hinted that golfers from far and near had signed up for the event which remains the biggest on the club’s calendar.

Business Segment Manager of headline sponsor, MTN, Emmanuel Gyasi indicated, ‘This prestigious event has seen great improvement by the years, and I have no doubt this year’s would move a notch higher.

‘The club has given the clearest indication that all is set for the event. We at MTN consider sponsoring this august event as honouring the king of this land as well as contributing to the development of sports in the country,’ he added.

The event is sponsored by MTN and supported by Cal Bank, HFC Bank, Alliance Motors, Golden Tulip, Royal Dean Hotel, Nokia, African Regent Hotel, Ashfoam, Latex Foam and Activa Insurance.

The annual event is a major feature on MTN’s Ashanti Fest program which has activities like Ashanti Fest Walk, which starts today, Movie Mania; Internet Festival; and Go Rio Car Festival among others.
