Nigerian Sergeant Gains Freedom After 54 Days

A Nigerian Peacekeeper in Sudan’s Darfur has regained freedom after being in captivity for two months.

The African Union-UN mission (UNAMID) revealed that Nigerian Sergeant Awesu Soleiman abduction had been kept secret.

UNAMID released a statement which read that the sergeant was released in the South Darfur capital Nyala and that he was abducted while driving a UNAMID water truck on March 9th.

UNAMID chief Mohamed Ibn Chambas confirmed the incident saying the recent activities of the governmentā€™s Rapid Support Forces were ā€œparticular concernā€ were of ā€œparticular concernā€ but rebel offensives, criminal activity and inter-communal fighting also contributed.

UNAMID was attacked 16 times last year Ā resulting ā€œsignificant loss of vehicles, weapons and ammunition,ā€ a report by UN chief Ban Ki-moon says.
