Columbian business delegation visits Ghana

A business delegation from Columbia in the United States of America is in the country to hold discussions with officials of the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing on the construction of 5,000 housing units across the country.

The construction of the houses is intended to reduce the current housing deficit in the country.

The delegation, which is led by the Mayor of Columbia, Mr Steve Benjamin, is also in the country to deepen the existing sister-city relationship between Columbia and Accra.

Mr Benjamin announced this during a courtesy call on the Mayor of Accra, Mr Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, during which he gave an assurance that he would use his office to promote development in Ghana.

He said there were many business opportunities in Ghana that investors could take advantage of.

“The commitment of the two cities to ensure development in both cities is very real and palpable and the power of ordinary people to cause an extraordinary change is impressive,” he noted.

Acknowledging the role of Ghana in the African liberation struggle, Mr Benjamin praised past leaders of Ghana for their pioneering roles in the struggle for democracy and self-reliance in Africa. He added that “Ghana stands out as a leading light in the fight for democracy in Africa.”

He expressed his commitment to ensuring the growth in relationship between Columbia and Accra and commended Mr Vanderpuije and members of the AMA for their role in developing Accra.

Mr Vanderpuije welcomed the opportunity to improve the business relationship between Accra and Columbia.

Recounting the relationship between the two cities, Mr Vanderpuije said on April 20, 2011, the two cities signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to cooperate and develop both cities.

“I led some members of the assembly to visit Columbia, South Carolina, to officially commence the sister-city relationship between the two cities and I must say that Accra has benefitted tremendously from the relationship,” he noted.

The AMA inducted Mr Benjamin as an honorary member of the assembly.
