IGP lauds Kofi Boakye over crime reduction in Ashanti

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Mohammed Alhassan, has commended the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), Mr Nathan Kofi Boakye, for bringing tremendous changes to the command and also helping to reduce crime in the region.

“This is the spirit that all should emulate — the spirit of problem solving and I’m already aware that crime has gone down considerably in the region,” he said.

So impressed was the IGP about the development at the Ashanti Regional Police Headquarters that he jokingly said, “I wish I could relocate the national headquarters here.”

  Changes
He said in addition to the infrastructural changes at the regional headquarters, Mr Boakye had also brought a lot of discipline into the service in the region, thereby winning the goodwill of the public.

The IGP, who was on a day’s working visit to the Ashanti Region, was full of praise for the regional police commander and implored other commanders to emulate that shining example, saying, “This is an eye opener for those of us in command positions.”

He said law and order remained paramount to the service, adding that it must permeate all aspects of the life of the citizenry.

According to him, the Ghana Police Service would continue to deliver on its mandate and that the changes being experienced within the service were not going to be a nine-day wonder.

  Public Affirmation
Mr Alhassan said his visit was in pursuance of the public reaffirmation programme that was launched earlier this year to sensitise regional commanders to the new paradigm shift and exchange ideas on the way forward.

He said there was the need to take a second look at the negative conduct of some members of the service which continued to give it a bad name.

He cited abuse of power, over detention and meddling in civil issues as some aspects of that negative conduct that had given the service a bad name and made the police fall short of public goodwill.
