Police in Kumasi have impounded 200 vehicles with the DV and DP trade license number plates. The operation started about a week ago.
The police have mounted several barriers in the metropolis to check drivers with such number plates and other illegal documents.
LUV FM’s Erastus Asare Donkor reported the vehicles were impounded in various operations conducted by the police last week.
The vehicle owners were assembled Tuesday morning and were schooled on which number plates were unacceptable under the law.
DCOP Kofi Boakye quoted Road Traffic Regulations Act 683 as saying ” No person shall use a trade license for the purpose not authorized under this regulation and also under any of the following regulations. Funeral, weddings, carrying children to and from school.”
He suspected that some miscreants use the DV and DP number plates to commit robberies.
The DV and DP number plates are temporary plates given to unregistered vehicles for the owners to drive the vehicle from the port to the garage. When registered, the vehicles are given their original number plates.
Such vehicles are not supposed to carry more than two persons and must not be used to attend social functions.
DCOP Boakye therefore issued warning letters to the drivers and cautioned that any person found to be using such number plates will be arrested and prosecuted.
