The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) on Thursday presented a cheque of GHC 10,000 to the Aburaman Senior High School in the Central region, as part of the NHIS@10 National Quiz Competition Winner’s prize.

Aburaman SHS displaced four other schools in the grand finale of the contest held in Accra late last year.

As part of its 10th anniversary commemoration in 2013, the NHIS organized an inter-schools competition to test the knowledge of students on general and NHIS related issues. Four schools from each region slugged it out among themselves at the regional level across the country.

Winners from each of the ten regions were then grouped into the southern and northern zones, after which the winner and runner up in each of the two sectors met in Accra in a battle of wits.

It is at this level that Aburaman SHS exhibited their supremacy in the Dan Afari-Yeboah moderated final, to beat other finalists, Arch Bishop Porter Girls, Bolga Girls’ SHS and St Francis of Asise Girls’ to take the coveted first spot.

Each of the four finalists received a 42” Flat screen Plasma Television set, a jumbo water tank and 400 exercise books donated by Cowbell, and other NHIS branded souvenirs.

Apart from these, the overall winner was promised a ten thousand cedis worth Water and Sanitation project of their choice. It is the Water and Sanitation project promise that the NHIA has redeemed.

Aburaman SHS has chosen to invest the cash in a mechanized borehole the school hopes will end the perennial water problem they have been facing.

Presenting the cheque to the school, Director of Corporate Affairs at the NHIA, Winfred Agbeibor encouraged the students to study hard so they can become great leaders of tomorrow. He also challenged them to always strive to keep flying the flag of the school high.

Mr Agbeibor congratulated the two students, Priscilla Yeboah and Viola Adams who represented the school, for making themselves and Aburaman SHS proud.

He added that the NHIA has decided to make the quiz competition an annual event and asked the students to comeback later this year to defend their title.

Headmistress of the school, Mrs Alberta Obiriwa Rigg Stewart was grateful to the NHIA for the gesture and appealed for further assistance for the school.

According to her, the mechanized borehole “will facilitate learning and ensure discipline in the school as this will prevent students from going out at all times in the name of looking for water.”

The presentation ceremony coincided with the handing over ceremony of the 2013/2014 prefects to a new crop of leaders of the school.

In all, forty senior high schools drawn from all ten regions of the country, including GSTS, St Peters SHS, Aburi Girls’, Tamale SHS, Sunyani SHS, locked horns at various levels over a one month period in their quest to annex the first position spot in the NHIS quiz competition which eventually was won by Aburaman SHS.
