Moyes in a handshake with Pep
Manchester United manager David Moyes has praised his players and the supporters after the 1-1 draw against Bayern Munich, and has vowed to go “toe to toe” with them in the second leg.
Nemanja Vidic gave United the lead, only for Bastian Schweinsteiger to score the vital away goal for Bayern to put the reigning European champions in pole position to reach the semi-finals.
After their battling display in the first leg at Old Trafford, Moyes though insists his side will go to the second leg full of confidence.
“We’ll go toe to toe with them – our best football has been in this competition, and we’ll need our best football,” he said. “We wanted to go into it with a real chance. We’ve given ourselves a great opportunity to go to Munich and win.
“The players played very well. I was a bit disappointed that we conceded a goal but it was a really good performance. There was a real determination tonight to ensure we did well. It’s a competition we’ve got really good history in.”
Moyes was also pleased with the support his side received, saying: “The fans were great tonight, there was a great atmosphere inside the ground.”
But he was less than pleased with the great opportunity that Danny Welbeck squandered in the first half. “At this level you need to be clinical. When you get the chances, you have to take them,” he said.
Bayern manager Pep Guardiola was “quite satisfied” with the draw, but was unhappy about Schweinsteiger’s second yellow card which led to him being dismissed for what appeared to be a soft foul on Wayne Rooney.
“He’s a very good referee, he had a very good game, but it was unfair,” Guardiola said, who added: “It’s not easy to create chances against teams who put 8 or 9 players in the box and we reacted well to going a goal down.
“I am quite satisfied. Manchester United has one of the best teams in the world. We scored an away goal which is important, but we also got lucky that efforts from Danny Welbeck and Wayne Rooney did not go in. The goal we conceded was difficult to defend.”
