KNUST To Get 24-Hour Security Patrol – Kofi Boakye

STUDENTS OF the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) can now breathe a sigh of relief, following the assurance by the new Regional Police Commander that the university will have a 24-hour security patrol to eliminate criminal activities on campus.

DCOP Nathan Kofi Boakye, Ashanti Regional Police commander who assured management and staff of the institution of 24-hour security patrol during a working visit to the Vice Chancellor of the institution, said the move is in support of measures by the administration to drastically eliminate all kinds of crime on campus.

In order to ensure full security on the campus for the over 30,000 students, he charged all hostel operators in the vicinity to make sure they provide fence walls with gates, since that could cut down crime by 50%.

He charged the management to be firm in applying laws to help the security apparatus with the needed support to enforce the rules and regulations in ensuring discipline and expose students who indulge in all kinds of criminal activities on campus.

He stated that democracy does not mean lawlessness, and for that matter, immediately there is a criminal case, whether it is a student or not the rules must be firmly applied.

The Regional Police boss entreated the management to collaborate with the Students Representative Council (SRC) to be abreast with the new security measures to make sure students do not board private or unregistered vehicles, which he said are threats to the security of the students and the university community as a whole.

He assured them that after consultation with the Inspector General of Police (IGP), he would make sure the TECH Police Station is upgraded into a district police station so that the commander there could control the police posts at Ayeduase and Kotei.

Prof Ellis Otoo, Vice Chancellor of KNUST explained that the institution was at its best with internal security issues and that about 70% of the students stay outside campus, which he said had created some security challenges.

He commended the Buffalo Unit for the fantastic methods and mechanisms they put in place when there is a problem, adding that they are always trying to create a relationship between the internal security and the police to ensure proper security on campus.

Meanwhile, DCOP Kofi Boakye has also visited the Alabar High Street, where motor bike dealers sell on the streets. He cautioned bicycle dealers to move their wares from the streets to allow free flow of traffic before his outfit moves in.

The Commander said those who flout simple orders would be prosecuted, warning that “We are here to make sure there is law and order in the region and make sure the people have conducive environment to go about their businesses without fear.”
