An Accra circuit court on Monday sentenced Abass Suleman, unemployed to 40 years imprisonment for robbery contrary to section 149 of Act 29/60
The court, presided over by Mr Francis Obiri convicted Abass on his own plea and confession to the offence. “My Lord I undertook the robbery operation alone, the others are not part,” Abass told the court in tears. Abass, who is an ex-convict, said he was imprisoned for assault charges and served the sentence for eighteen months at the Akuse Prisons.
Police Chief Superintendent Duuti Tuaruka told the court that, the complainant is a German national residing at Klangon, where the convict also resided.
He said on February 23, at about 02:40 hours, the complainant was returning home from town holding a black bag containing a Toshiba laptop computer and a green lady’s purse, in which she had her credit card, health insurance card and a cash amount of GH48.00.
The prosecution said about 20 metres to her home, Abass emerged from a nearby bush behind the complainant, pushed her to the ground and forcibly collected the bag and bolted.
He said the complainant screamed for help and a ‘Good Samaritan’ came to her aid and the case was reported to the police.
Upon a tip off, the police arrested Abass at his hide out at Klangon, and led the police to arrest the other accused persons, where the items were retrieved.
Meanwhile four other persons arrested together with Abass for dishonestly receiving contrary to section 149 of Act 29/60 have been granted bail to the sum of GH₵10,000 with, two sureties to be justified to re-appear on March 17.
