BNI Probes Offinso MCE Over Missing Chemicals

Baffuor Kesse Amankwah
THE BNI IS currently investigating the circumstance that led to the misplacement of about 1,000 boxes of chemicals meant for mass Cocoa spraying exercise in the Offinso South Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Eric Opoku, said he directed the BNI to investigate the issue after the Municipal Chief Executive of the area, Baffuor Kesse Amankwah, was accused of stealing the chemicals.

The Minister told Kapital Radio that some leaders of the Cocoa Gang Spraying in the area, a few weeks ago, petitioned him that some cocoa chemicals for the area could not be accounted for.

Mr Opoku said the petitioners accused the MCE of the area, Mr Amankwah, of having something to do with the missing cocoa chemicals numbering about 1,000 boxes.

The Ashanti Regional Minister explained that he quickly summoned a meeting at his office in Kumasi which was attended by the petitioners and Mr Amankwah.

He said during the meeting, some of the people alleged that about 1,000 boxes of chemicals meant for mass cocoa spraying exercise in the municipality could not be located and they accused the MCE of stealing it.

Other people present at the meeting, the Ashanti Regional Minister recounted, said the chemicals were not missing but were being kept at a different location since its original storage place was being rehabilitated.

Mr Opoku noted that at that moment those people that were accusing the MCE responded that there was no iota of truth in the narration given by the other group, insisting that the items were missing and the MCE had some answers to give.

Based on what transpired at the meeting, the minister said he thought it prudent to invite the BNI to investigate the matter.

Mr Opoku said so far investigations by the BNI had been smooth, stating that most of the people in connection with the case had been invited and questioned by the BNI.

He said the BNI has been keeping him informed about their investigations into the dicey case, disclosing that by March 20, 2014, they would complete the investigations and hand to him their findings for the necessary action to be taken.
