Group Calls For Dismissal Of Mayor Of Sekondi-Takoradi

The Western Basic Democracy, a Takoradi-based pressure group, on Wednesday called on President John Mahama to dismiss the Mayor of Sekondi-Takoradi, Captain (RTD) Anthony Cudjoe, with immediate effect.

The leader of the group, Mr. Kweku Aboagye Boampong, told the Media in Takoradi that the Mayor had not shown concern about the welfare of people in the Metropolis.

The group accused the Metropolitan Chief Executive of not acting in accordance with the Local Government Act, Act 462, which spells out the powers of the various Assemblies.

The group said the Mayor endorsed the illegal demolition of kiosks and containers belonging to the Tanokrom-Kokompe artisans with impunity.

It said the demolition exercise had rendered most of the artisans jobless, thus worsening the already difficult economic situation within the Metropolis.

The group queried the Mayor for allowing a company to construct an auto mobile showroom at a place earmarked for the expansion of a dual carriage road in the Metropolis.

It said the artisans would demonstrate on Thursday February 20, to protest against the city authorities for perpetrating injustice in the Metropolis.

A security task force stormed the Tanokrom-Kokompe site this morning, to continue the demolition exercise started about two weeks ago.

However, it was strongly resisted by some angry artisans who mounted road blocks to prevent them.

About two weeks ago, a joint military and police task force, pulled down more than 100 structures belonging to the artisans to pave way for the construction of a shopping mall.

The artisans claimed that the new site at Mampong-Kansaweredo was not fully prepared to host over 2500 artisans because certain basic amenities at the place had not been put in place.

They complained about bad road network to the place, flooding, inadequate electricity supply, and the absence of toilet facilities, as well as lack of water, as some of the challenges at the new site.
