One person died on the spot, while 11 others sustained severe injuries, when the Hyundai Grace Urvan bus on which they were travelling, crashed into the passenger side of a Mercedes Benz Mini Bus at Ankakor in the Central Region on Monday morning.

The body of the deceased, identified as Kwaw Okai, 45, has been deposited at the Twifo Praso Hospital Morgue, while the casualties, including Yaw Andoh, the driver of the urvan bus, are receiving medical care at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.

The driver and the only occupant of the Mercedes Benz, Yao Agbeko, 28, however, did not sustain any injury.

The Central Regional Chairman of the National Road Safety Commission, Mr. Stephen Anokye, told the Ghana News Agency that the accident which occurred around 5:00 am, was caused by over-speeding on the part of the urvan bus driver.

He said the 33-seater Hyundai Grace urvan bus, was travelling from Atobiase to Cape Coast, while the Mercedes Benz Mini Bus, belonging to the Twifo Oil Palm Plantation (TOPP), was on its way to Twifo Praso after it had undergone repairs in Cape Coast.

He said around a curve between Ankakor and Mfuom, the driver of the urvan bus who was over-speeding lost control and crossed into the lane of the Mercedes Benz, crashing onto its passenger’s side.

Mr. Anokye said parts of the urvan bus had to be cut off, in order to rescue some of the trapped passengers.
