Kwabenya Residents Live In Fear

Residents of Kwabenya in the Ga-East Municipal Assembly are living in fear as a result of the activities and operations of a group of land guards in the area.

A number of residents who spoke to DAILY GUIDE expressed grave concern about the inability of the police to clamp down on the activities of the land guards.

One of the land guards who was identified as Theophilus Ankamah Aryee, according to some of the residents, ‘has been priding himself as an untouchable person in the community.’

He was also said to be operating with one T.T and the late Aryee Quaye a.k.a Bullet, who was killed during one of such episodes.

Some of the residents who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of being victimised also added that Theophilus and his gang have been terrorising them for the past two years without any serious intervention by the police.

The land guards were said to be often armed with ammunitions.

Solomon Tettey, a spokesman for the youth in the area who braved the odds and spoke to DAILY GUIDE said, ‘The land guards take people’s properties with impunity and if you dare talk about them, you will be attacked. The sad aspect of this is that, whenever a report is made to the police, we see them taking no action.’

Meanwhile, the assembly member for Kwabenya Electoral Area, Adolphus Briadnt, who has been equally worried about the development, has stressed on the urgent need for the appropriate authorities to move in to save situation.

‘The residents have been lodging complaints with me about the land guards’ issues. Whenever I go out, I see some thugs going around disturbing people on their lands,’ he noted, declining to mention any names.

According to Mr Briadnt, several attempts made to the police to help salvage the situation had proved futile, as they have not yet responded to the state of affairs in the community.

The member added that the situation was dragging Kwabenya’s good name in the mud as a once peaceful community.

He had, therefore, appealed to the government and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and concerned bodies to come to the aid of the community before the matter degenerates into something more chaotic.
