Kofi Annan ICT Centre Transforms To Varsity

THE Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in Information and Communications Technology (AITI-KACE) would soon be converted into a university.

The development is poised to propel Ghana into a technology powerhouse in the West African region.

Ghana’s Minister of Communications, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, said the government was working hard to turn the centre into the leading university in the sub-region.

The centre which currently runs postgraduate diploma courses in Advanced Computing, Wireless and Mobile Computing, Software development, among others would add up degree programmes when it becomes a university, according to officials of the centre.

To increase the centre courses, it recently introduced an online course on Copyright law, the ‘CopyrightX’, to enhance access and expand ICT in the education agenda.

Officials of the centre explained that the CopyrightX offers a vital chance for individuals with little or no legal background to learn any aspect of the Copyright law.

The Director General of the centre, Dorothy Gordon added that the new course which is a 12-week is being organised in partnership with the Harvard Law School, the HarvardX distance-learning initiative and the Berkman Center for Internet and Society.

Gordon, along with co-facilitator Sheila Clinton, expressed their appreciation during the launch of CopyrightX.

“It is a privilege that we have this open course ware provided by the kind courtesy of Harvard and the smart application of the Creative Common licensing, which has also been matched by AITI-KACE’s commitment to offer the Course for free in Ghana.”
