The Society for Women and AIDS in Africa (SWAA-Ghana) has relaunched the newly improved female condom (FC2) in line with a campaign to educate the general public and promote the use of the product.
The programme was also to raise the awareness of the advantages associated with the use of the condom in preventing unwanted pregnancies, checking the spread of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
SWAA International, a non-governmental women organisation, is committed to reducing the impact of HIV/AIDS on women and children in Africa.
The launch was done in partnership with the Ghana AIDS Commission and the Ghana Health Service in Accra last Thursday. Why female condom?
The Vice-President of SWAA Ghana, Mrs Elsie Ayeh, said the female condom was important because it was the only safe and effective female-initiated method that provided a double protection against unintended pregnancies, as well as sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV/AIDS.
She said although the female condom was currently available in Ghana, its patronage was low, hence the need for a campaign to educate the public especially women, to accept and use the product.

An executive member of the SWAA Ghana, Mrs Amerley Awua Asamoa, said the female condom, introduced about 10 years ago, received low patronage because most women were not comfortable with its usage and pointed out that the new female condom, which is a thin, soft and loose-fitting polythene pouch that had flexible rings at each end, had been designed to address those complaints.
She said a user could insert the female condom up to eight hours before intercourse.
