GMA Condemns Attack On Doctors, Nurses

THE GHANA Medical Association has condemned last week Thursday’s attack on personnel of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) by irate relatives of Madam Sawaiba Abdul Mumin, who lost a baby at birth at the facility. It has described the incident as barbaric and uncivilised.

In a statement signed by Dr. Kwabena Opoku-Adusei and Dr. Frank Serebour, the President and Secretary respectively, the GMA registered its displeasure over the rampage and condemned the unsavory attacks in no uncertain terms.

The Medical Association stated that the physical attacks on the

doctors and other health personnel in Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi as well as the Nkawie District Hospital both in the Ashanti Region last Thursday, February 13, 2014 can only be described as

barbaric and uncivilized.
The Association called on the Police to ensure that all the criminally minded culprits arrested in these incidents are fully prosecuted, to serve as a deterrent to others who will want to behave in such an

irresponsible manner in future.
“It is the position of the GMA that, these attacks by these unscrupulous individuals cannot be entertained under any circumstances especially in the current democratic dispensation where the rule of law is supposed to be the order of the day” it stated.

The GMA emphasized clearly that if adequate steps are not taken by Administrators of various hospitals in the country to guarantee the security and safety of its members, it will have no option than to

direct all doctors to stay away from the hospitals in the quest to safeguard their lives.
