Barclays Bank and United Way Ghana, an international non-profit organization, have paid a special visit to orphans whose parents are suffering from HIV/AIDS within the Manya Krobo traditional area in the Eastern Region, as a means of showing love and compassion to them during the St. Valentine’s celebration.
Manya Krobo is regarded as one of the areas in the country with high rate of HIV/AIDS patients.
Barclays and United Way used the visit to teach the orphans literacy skills and also to teach the queen mothers of the area who are taking care of the children, financial management skills.
Barclays Bank gave an amount of GHc10,837 to the queen mothers of Manya Krobo towards the completion of a resource center for the orphans.
The resource facility, currently under construction, is to serve as an Information Communication Technology (ICT) and Vocational Training center for the orphans.
The project was started four years ago through the initiative of United Way, in conjunction with Barclays Bank and other corporate organizations like New-Mont Ghana, a mining firm.
The Community Relations Manager of Barclays Bank, Solomon Agyemfra stated, ‘The purpose of this visit is to show love to these children during this season of love. We feel that they need love and affection’.
He continued, ‘We want to show care towards the vulnerable within the society,’ he said, adding that showing love to the 1,072 orphans was a great thing that anyone who truly loves humanity can do.
Community Development Officer of United Way Ghana, Herman Osabutey, showed appreciation for Barclays’ willingness to collaborate with his outfit over the past four years and showing compassion towards the orphans.
One of the queen mothers of the Kroboland, Manya Makufsu II of Sui Sui Jaase, told DAILY GUIDE that ‘over the past few years we were being shunned by our fellow Ghanaians, especially those from Koforidua, due to the fact that some of us lived with HIV’, adding that ‘due to this we have formed an association to campaign against stigmatizing those living with HIV in this area’.
She expressed appreciation to Barclays and United Way for visiting them every Valentine Day and showing love to the kids.
