The Speaker of Parliament Edward Doe Adjaho has directed the Inspector General of Police IGP, Mohammed Ahmed Alhassan to investigate alledged police brutalities during a demonstration at Kenyase-Antoa in the Ashanti region last week Monday.
Radio Ghana’s Parliamentary Correspondents, Dominic Hlordzi and Augustus Acquaye report that the Speaker’s call follows an appeal by the MP for Kwabre East, Kofi Frimpong in a statement on the floor on the alledged use of force on the peaceful demonstrators.
The MP said the actions of the police did not only affect adults but also children of the town.
He said on the third of this month, some residents of Kenyase-ANTOA undertook a peaceful demonstration over the deplorable nature of their roads.
The rather calm procession turned sour when a deployment of police men from Kumasi joined their colleagues in the town.
According to the MP for Kwabre East, Kofi Frimpong the community members were within their legal rights to protest since the they gave the police prior notice and were given the go ahead. He therefore described the actions of the police as unacceptable.
He said an investigation into the matter can prevent a future recurrence.
The Speaker OF Parliament Edward Adjaho based on the consensus of the MPs, directed that the office of the IGP investigate the matter and furnish Parliament with its report in two weeks.
