The authorities of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) have appealed to all staff members who fled their duty posts in the wake of assaults and brutalities on them by some gangs from one of the zongo communities in Kumasi, to return to duty.
According to the authorities, strenuous efforts have been made to get the police and other security agencies to provide adequate security for staff and patients to prevent the occurrence of such dastardly
acts in future.
The appeal is contained in a statement signed by Mr Kwame Frimpong, Public Relations Officer of the hospital and issued in Kumasi.
The statement said management condemned the brute attack and unwarranted assault on doctors and nurses at the Obstetrics and Gyneacology in the strongest terms, since the hospital could not
operate in an atmosphere of insecurity.
It would be recalled that a group of young men from one of the zongo communities on Thursday stormed the hospital, attacked and brutalized doctors and nurses of the “A” Ward, for allegedly “stealing” the body of a dead baby of a member of their community who had gone to deliver
at the facility.
It took the swift intervention of the police to restore law and order at the hospital. Three of the suspects were arrested and are currently in police custody for interrogation.
The statement said Management was committed to work to get to the bottom of the matter, as it was co-operating with the Police and a fact-finding committee set up by the Ministry of Health to bring some finality to the issue.
