A minor who allegedly killed her 66-year-old mother at Abutia–Degblevi during an argument has provisionally been charged with murder to stand trial at the Ho District Court.
The 17-year-old suspect, name withheld, allegedly smashed the head of her mother, Gadzi Abla, with a pestle, killing her instantly.
The incident occurred when Abla attempted to flog the suspect, a nursing mother of a year-and-a-half baby, for disobeying orders to return a phone her boyfriend bought for her. Disagreement over relationship
Abla purportedly had an issue with the suspect’s relationship because the said boyfriend had dated two other women in the same family.
The court, presided over by Augustine Aku-Sam, remanded the suspect in prison custody until February 25, 2014, for the police to complete investigations into the matter.
The Volta Regional Police PRO, Chief Inspector Joy Afagbedzi, who briefed the Daily Graphic on the incident, said on February 6, 2014 at about 9 a.m., the said boyfriend went to the house of the suspect to collect a phone he had bought for her.
He stated that the boyfriend later brought the phone back to the suspect.
His action did not go down well with the suspect’s mother, who advised the suspect to give back the phone to the boyfriend. Heated argument
According to Chief Inspector Afagbedzi, the suspect remained adamant and that resulted in a heated argument between her and the mother.
The mother then collected the mobile phone and smashed it. The girl got offended and insulted her mother, who picked a cane and decided to flog her.
In her bid to resist that, the suspect spontaneously picked a pestle and hit the head of her mother. She fell down and went into a coma.
After the act, the suspect went hiding in her father’s farm but her brothers found her and handed her over to the police at Anyirawase.
Abla was rushed to the Ho Municipal Hospital by neighbours but she was pronounced dead on arrival.
The body has been deposited at the hospital morgue awaiting transfer to the Police Hospital for autopsy.
