COCOBOD CEO visits cocoa-growing areas in the Ashanti Region

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the COCOBOD, Dr Stephen Kwabena Opuni, has embarked on a working visit to cocoa-growing areas in the Ashanti Region to acquaint himself with the situation on the ground.

The visit was to afford the chief executive the opportunity to interact with cocoa farmers and the chiefs in the cocoa-growing areas to have a first-hand knowledge about issues affecting them.

Addressing the chiefs and some of the cocoa farmers at Toase in the Atwima-Nwabiagya District, Dr Opuni commended the cocoa farmers for their hard work and dedication which had enabled cocoa production in the country to reach an appreciable height.

He pledged to work together with the farmers and the chiefs in the cocoa producing zones to come out with a pragmatic and meaningful strategy to enable the country to regain the position as world’s lead producer of cocoa.

The Chief of the town, Nana Asiamah Poku Afrifa II, who is also a cocoa farmer, commended Dr Opuni for the visit to the Atwima area, which he described as the first in the history of the area by a sitting chief executive officer of COCOBOD, adding that the area was one of the strong cocoa-producing zones in the country.

He assured the chief executive officer that his visit had inspired the farmers to work harder for the country to achieve its leadership role in cocoa production.

He appealed to Dr Opuni to make his outfit provide the needed farming inputs such as machetes, insecticides and spraying machines at the right time to enable them to work with them to help increase their production capacity.

Nana Afrifa, who incidentally is the Ashanti Regional representative of the Council of State, indicated that the traditional way of farming had given way to modern scientific way and stressed that farmers should be given modern technical knowledge in agriculture to help boost cocoa production.

The CEO also interacted with the staff of the Produce Buying Company (PBC), Area A/B and the District Quality Control.
