The President’s nominee for District Chief Executive (DCE) for Kumbungu in the Northern Region, Alhaji Iddi Manzah Mahama, was on Monday rejected by the assembly members as he failed to secure the mandatory two-thirds majority.
Out of the total 35 assembly members who constitute the Electoral College, 20 voted for him as against 15 despite earlier pleas by the Northern Regional Minister, Bede Zedeng, for the assembly members to endorse him unanimously.
The Regional Minister earlier in his welcome address was virtually on his knees pleading with assembly members to respect the President by confirming the nominee, but a number of them thought otherwise, and by close of polls conducted by the Electoral Commission, the Minister left the venue disappointed.
Not even the presence of almost all DCEs in the region compelled the assembly members to change their decision as they stood their grounds and refused to confirm the former Tolon DCE.
DAILY GUIDE gathered that most of them were unenthused about his reappointment having spent four years as DCE for Tolon-Kumbungu and said the time was rather ripe for fresh hands.
By the voting pattern, Alhaji Iddi Mahama qualifies for a second attempt in order to secure the mandatory two-thirds majority in order to become DCE.
President John Mahama in accordance with Article 243(1) of the 1992 Constitution and Section 20(1) of the Local Government Act 1993, Act 462 about a week ago nominated, Alhaji Iddi Manzah Mahama, Daniel Osei and John Nurudeen Ahortu as DCEs for Kumbungu, Asante Akyem North and Ada East respectfully.
But characteristic of what befell other nominees in the past in some parts of the country under the current government, all three failed to be confirmed by the respective assemblies.
Meanwhile, some youth of Kumbungu insisted that Alhaji Manzah was not the preferred choice of the people appealing to the President to save himself any further embarrassment by appointing a new person who would be acceptable to the chiefs and people of the area.
