Head coach of Accra Hearts of Oak Mohammed Polo has accused his senior players of sabotaging him, in the wake of the club’s 3-0 home defeat to Wa All Stars.
The Phobians suffered one of their worst losses in recent history on Wednesday afternoon, after which sections of the Phobian support called for the dismissal of Polo.
Alongside the calls for his dismissal, the name of former coach David Duncan came up. Duncan was sacked by the Hearts board earlier in the season, which was not a decision that was taken lightly by staunch supporters.
In an extensive interview with Accra-based Happy FM, Polo placed the blame entirely at the foot of his senior players, who he said wanted to sabotage him.
“I have always had the support of the board from day one. The board has nothing to do with the current situation.”
“The senior players have not given me enough support. They are the ones supposed to look after themselves and their career.”
“They keep on feigning injuries and coming up with excuses at training. You should take a look at the young ones in the team. The older ones are drawing the team back, or else we would have had a great blend.”
“This is the third time I am coaching Hearts of Oak, so I can’t be told I am incapable of coaching this club. I have managed the likes of Stephen Appiah and John Boye. I am more than capable of doing my job.”
“Football has changed a lot since I retired. A lot of money has been pumped into the game. Because of this players think they have a lot more power to do what they want to do. “
“These are the same players that played at the starting of the season, so I do not believe they cannot drive the club up the table.”
Despite the current troubles, Polo is prepared to work with the players to save Hearts’ season.
“They should come up to me, I will forgive them, and so we can move the club forward”, he said
