The Ghana Premier League (GPL) returned this afternoon, and wasn’t short of excitement, as teams battled it out at both ends of the table. We bring you a recap of what transpired at the various league centres.
Hearts of Oak 0-3 Wa All Stars
The result of the day came at the Accra Sports Stadium as Accra Hearts of Oak succumbed to a shock 0-3 defeat at the hands of Wa All Stars.
The first goal came as early as the 2nd minute, when Samuel Boateng side-footed home with All Star’s first attack.
The second and third goals came in the 50th and 58th minutes respectively, courtesy Ganiu Ishmael and Paul de Vries.
The loss could mean that Hearts lose further grounds on Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Ashgold, who are yet to play their matches.
The last time Hearts of Oak lost by three goals at the Accra Sports Stadium was in 2004 against Liberty Professionals, but it was the scientific soccer lads who were playing at home.
Fans of the Phobians were spotted calling for the dismissal of Mohammed Polo, who hasn’t enjoyed a positive campaign ever since his appointment.
New Edubiase 1-0 Aduana Stars
New Edubiase United relieved themselves off some pressure at the lower end of the league with a tight 1-0 victory over Aduana at the Bekwai Park in Bekwai.
Nuhu Fuseini was the hero on the day, as he sealed the three points for Edubiase with a second half strike.
The goal came early in the second half after both sides struggled to break each other down in the first half.
The home team kept up the pressure to maintain their lead, and limited Aduana to a series of counter-attacks which didn’t yield positive results.
The victory means New Edubiase have now won five, drawn two and lost only once at the Bekwai Park this season, and in the process leapfrogging Aduana Stars in the standings.
Hasaacas 0-0 Amidaus Profesionals
Amidaus Professionals did nothing to boost their chances of survival as they drew blanks against Hasaacas in Sekondi.
Both sides fought hard to break the deadlock, but to no avail, as they cancelled each other out time and time again.
Amidaus may look on this result as a positive one, considering their horrendous form coming into the game.
Hasaacas looked to impose their physical strength on the game, as Amidaus tried to outwit them by keeping a large share o possession.
The draw leaves the Sekondi based club in 5th position for the time being, while Amidaus continue to struggle in the relegation zone.
Hearts of Lions 2-0 Liberty Professionals
Kpando Hearts of Lions moved up to third on the table with a convincing 2-0 victory over Liberty Professionals.
The first goal came in the 28th minute courtesy Kojo Poku, with Isaac Quansah getting the second close to the 60th minute mark.
The game was largely dominated by the hosts, as Liberty struggled to make any meaningful incursions on their opponents’ goal.
The Kpando based club started the day in 4th position, but moved up the log to replace Hearts of Oak who lost heavily to Wa All Stars.
Liberty will be wary of the fact that they could be pulled right into the relegation do-fight after their loss.
Bechem United 2-0 King Faisal
Bechem United made the most of their home advantage, as they went defeated King Faisal 2-0 in Bechem.
The defeat leaves Faisal two points above the relegation zone, with Bechem United leapfrogging them in the standings.
Noah Nartey put the home team in front before James Papa Yaw added the second to hand them all three points.
The result will serve as sweet revenge for Bechem United who lost the reverse fixture in the first round.
