Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has predicted that the Black Stars will repeat their record of being Africa’s best team at the World Cup when the tournament kicks off in Brazil in June.
The Black Stars were Africa’s best side at the 2006 World Cup in Germany as they were the only African side to reach the last 16 of the tournament.
They repeated the dose at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa when they reached the quarter-final only to be eliminated under bizarre circumstances by Uruguay.
Ghana has been Africa’s best team in the two previous tournament despite the presence of countries like Ivory Coast, Cameroon and Nigeria.
With all of these countries as well as Algeria joining the Black Stars as the African contingent, Gyan says the Black Stars are likely to repeat their good form for Africa.
“We left the last competition with a bang, although under strange circumstances. And the fans have still not forgotten about it so I believe that they will still be waiting to see what we can do again this time,” Gyan said.
“The team has been waiting a long time since the 2010 World Cup in which we reached the quarter finals.
“Being so close to becoming the first African team to reach the semi-final was a great triumph but painful at the same time and are really motivated to come back and achieve an even better result.”
“I believe that we can only get better this time at the World Cup.”
Ghana will play Germany, Portugal and the USA in the Group of Death.
