Don’t Invite Political Hotheads On Radio Talkshows—NDC Lawyer Advises

Abraham Amaliba, an NDC lawyer has advised hosts of various political programmes on radio to avoid inviting certain political activists for radio discussions ahead of the election petition verdict.

The NDC lawyer reckons that such a move will go a long way to keep the peace Ghanaians are enjoying and also reduce tensions ahead of the much anticipated election petition hearing verdict by the Supreme Court in August.

Mr. Amaliba made the comments during a panel discussion on News File on Joy FM.

The NDC lawyer’s comment comes at a time tensions are rising ahead of the resumption of the Supreme Court sitting.

Already two ‘loud-mouths’, Ken Kuranchie of the Daily Searchlight and Stephen Atuguba of the NDC have suffered incarcerated for raising their tongues beyond the limits.

The peace drum beats
Mr. Amaliba further said the two leading protagonists in the election petition hearing, President John Mahama and Nana Addo Danquah Akufo Addo could also do a bit more to assure Ghanaians post-verdict peace.

According to him, the two gentlemen could demonstrate to their followers they would accept the verdict and so all Ghanaians should.

The NDC lawyer was also of the opinion that religious bodies had a major role to play adding that, the peace campaigns and summits being held to prepare the minds of Ghanaians to accept the outcome of the results, could also be used to extract peace assurances from President Mahama and Akuffo Addo.

Abdul Malik Kwako Baako, Managing Editor of the New Crusading Guide, added, political parties and their commentators also had a huge role to play in ensuring sanity on the airwaves so as to reduce tension.

He said political commentators must avoid what he called ‘verbal diarrhoea’ when making submissions on radio programmes in order to keep the pace and the promotion of a wider acceptability of the Supreme Court verdict.

According to him, the media, particularly, the electronic media had the responsibility of reinforcing its gate-keeping authority by ensuring that political commentators who use their platforms do not inflame passions with their unmeasured utterances.

He appealed to the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and PRINPAG to organise seminars and workshops for their members on how to ensure that politicians and other social commentators do not defile atmosphere with their utterances.

Gabby Otchere Darko a member of the NPP legal team at the studio discussion said he was happy NPP and NDC are taken proactive systems to educate supporters to accept the outcome of the results.

He said, the General Secretary the NPP had a meeting with six regional chairmen of the party and asked them to educate their supporters to embrace the outcome of the result in their various regions.

He touted the peaceful character of President Mahama and Akuffo Addo.

‘I know President Mahama doesn’t wish for war as well as Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo because both leaders have always loved and appreciated the peace we are enjoying in this Nation. Nana Addo was fighting detector ship he didn’t even pick a knife because he believes in a rule of Law,’ Gabby indicated.
