The committee constituted by President John Dramani Mahama to provide technical details on the 200 community day senior high schools (SHSs) has presented its report to the President.

The report provided various sample models, specific locations and cost of each of the 200 schools.

Under the project, each beneficiary community will have classroom blocks, an administration block, a library, a master’s bungalow and teachers’ quarters.

One of the schools in each of the 10 regions will be developed into a sports college with a football field and other sports facilities.

The 200 SHSs are captured in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) manifesto as part of the priority projects to be executed within four years.

A total of 50 SHSs are to be put up every year to achieve the 200 SHSs by 2016.
To facilitate the construction of the 200 community day SHS and other priority projects, President Mahama constituted a Task Force on Government Priority Projects early on this year.

The five-member task force has Mr Alban S.K. Bagbin, Member of Parliament (MP) for Nadowli West and former Minister of Health; Mr E.T. Mensah, MP for Ningo Prampram and former Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing; and Mr Cletus Avoka, MP for Zebilla and former Majority Leader in Parliament, as members.

The others are Dr Stephen Adiyiya, a Social Development Consultant who is the Co-ordinator with Mr P.V. Obeng, a Senior Advisor to the President as the Convener of the taskforce.

The projects on the educational sector, which include the construction of the 200 community SHSs and a University in the Eastern region, will be spearheaded by Mr Avoka.

Briefing journalists on the project Thursday at the Flagstaff House in Accra, a Deputy Minister of Information and Media Relations, Mr Felix Ofosu Kwakye, said the committee worked hand-in-hand with the Ministry of Education. He said the President was impressed with the work of the committee and believed that the committee has done a thorough job.

The deputy minister said with the submission of the committee’s report, work on the first 50 of the SHSs would start soon.
