Lydia Lariba Bawa

Lydia Lariba Bawa, a former Chief Manager at SIC Insurance Limited, took over as new Insurance Commissioner effective June 1, 2013.

Madam Bawa, until her appointment by President John Dramani Mahama, was SIC’s Area Manager for Kumasi.

Madam Bawa, with over 30 years of experience in insurance business, has occupied various managerial positions since 1982.

Madam Lydia, a native of Wiaga in the Upper East region who served as trainee supervisor in motor claims at SIC from 1982 to 1984, was the Head of Motor Claims Department from 1993 to 1998.

She was also SIC’s Area Manager for Tema Area Office from 1998 to 2001, rising to become the head of Customer Service and Sales Management Department and Sales and Marketing in 2001 and 2002 respectively.

Through hard work, Madam Lydia was promoted to head the Health Insurance Department from 2003 to 2006. She served as the Tema Area Manager from 2006 to 2009.

She holds an EMBA Degree (Finance) from the University of Ghana Business School as well as a Diploma from the West Africa Insurance Institute (WAII), Liberia.

The new Insurance Commissioner holds a BA (Hons) degree from the University of Ghana.

Madame Bawa, a Chartered Insurer (CII UK), was called to the Ghana Bar in 1995.

She is a visiting lecturer at the West African Insurance Institute in Banjul Gambia, lecturer at Ghana Insurance College, an Executive Member of FIDA from 2007 to date and a vice president of Accra Diocese Justice and Peace Commission from 2004 to date.
