Makola Fire victims register for loans

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) yesterday began registering victims of the fire outbreak at the Makola Number Two Market to enable them to benefit from the loans and assistance promised by President John Dramani Mahama.

The traders have also begun the process required of them to access the  loans and assistance from the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC).

About 700 traders were affected by the fire outbreak which occurred on Tuesday, June 4, 2013.

After the incident, the President visited the market to see the extent of the damage and to console the victims.

During an interaction with the traders, the President promised to help them to access some loans and other forms of assistance.

Some of the traders, however, expressed frustration that the assistance had delayed.

Meanwhile, the team invited by the President to unravel the mystery of the fire outbreaks has began investigations.

The section of the Makola Shopping Mall which also got burnt on Friday, May 24, 2013, is still closed for investigations.

Forty-nine shops were destroyed by the fire at the mall.

At the Kantamanto Market, the Daily Graphic observed that the traders had built wooden structures and mounted umbrellas to provide them some shade to enable them to carry out their businesses.
