170 drivers arrested for traffic offences

One hundred and seventy private and commercial drivers were arrested yesterday for careless driving and other motor traffic offences during a special operation by the police to ensure road safety.
Some of the drivers possessed fake or expired driving licences, while others were underage..

Others did not have roadworthy certificates, insurance and spare or good tyres.

Seventy of those arrested were processed for court and fined with various sums of money ranging between GHc180.00 to GHc600.00

The Western Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Olivia Aduku, said the operation would be sustained as part of efforts by the police to bring sanity to the roads and check the frequent flouting of road safety regulations.

She said the police had given a two-week ultimate to motorists in the metropolis and other parts of the Western Region to put their papers in order and carry their licences with them.

She said the laws did not also allow people to drive with expired licences and fake number plates and to use DV number places at unapproved times.

“It is sad that people break these laws with impunity,” said Ms Aduku.

At a briefing in Takoradi last week, the Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Kofi Boakye, said as a law enforcement agency, the police would not fold their arms to watch as people took the law into their own hands.
