Gomoa Pomadze (C/R), March 4, GNA – The Mawerehen of Gomoa Ajumako Traditional Area, Nana Kobina Abew Out, has called for stiffer punishment for drivers who through carelessness or impatience cause road accidents and suggested the punishment should include withdrawal of licenses and imprisonment.

He said the rate at which road accidents were claiming precious lives must be of a great concern to all Ghanaians.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency at Gomoa Pomadze, the chief said most of the accidents could have been avoided if the drivers had been a little patient.

‘A law involving serving of a prison term for drivers who are involved in accidents through carelessness can be of a deterrent to other drivers,’ Nana  Kobina Abew Otu said.

He advised drivers’ unions such as GPRTU, PROTOA and others to organise daily prayers at their various stations every morning to seek the divine protection for their drivers.

Nana Kobina Abew Otu said any driver whose licence had been withdrawn for careless driving must not be allowed to work at any station as a porter for the period the licence had be withdrawn.

He appealed to passengers to report the conduct of drivers who speed and drive recklessly to the police and added ‘Let us all contribute to reduce if not eliminate road accidents on our roads.
