Accra, March 26, GNA – The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) has congratulated the Black Stars on their sterling performance against the Sudan in the 2014 World Cup qualifier at the Baba Yara Stadium, Kumasi last Sunday.
A statement from the secretariat said the performance of the team gives strong indications of their determination to make a third successive appearance at the global event next year a reality.
It added that though the performance of the team had brought relief to Ghanaians, as well as enhanced their chances of qualifying for the World Cup, it was imperative for the team to remain focused since there were tougher matches ahead in the competition.
The Association also commended the national under-20 team, the Black Satellites, for advancing to the finals of the Africa Youth Championship in Algeria, as well as qualifying for the World Youth Championship in Turkey.
The statement said the performance of the Satellites establishes Ghana’s status as leaders in youth football on the continent and the world as a whole.
On Joseph Agbeko, the Association praised him for his work and resilience before and during the fight with Columbian Louis Melendez which culminated in his annexing the International Boxing Organisation (IBO) Bantamweight title in the early hours of Saturday.
The statement said the gritty nature of the Columbian notwithstanding, Agbeko did the country extremely proud by staying on top of the contest.
