Police arraign security guard for negligence

The police on Friday arraigned a security guard, Timothy Akaba, 20, of Gwarimpa Estate, before an Abuja Senior Magistrates’ Court for alleged negligence at his duty post.

The Police prosecutor, Mr Salihu Mohammed, told the court that the accused slept off while on duty, thereby, allowing unknown men to invade the house and steal a brand new LG Air conditioner, valued at N60,000.

Mohammed told the court that, one Mohammed Onuja, of house no 10, 161 Crescent, Gwarimpa Estate, reported the case to the Gwarimpa Divisional Police Station, Abuja, on March 12.

The prosecutor said the action of the accused could have endangered the lives of the occupants of the house, where he was supposed to be guarding.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges. The prosecutor, who prayed the court not to admit the accused to bail, said that the police was still carrying out investigation.

Mohammed said that if the court admitted the accused to bail, he would likely tamper with police investigation and might likely jump bail.

The court, however, exercised its discretion in favour of the accused person and granted him bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two reliable sureties.

Senior Magistrate Abdullahi Ilelah ordered that the sureties must have a reasonable means of livelihood, a defined address and must live within the jurisdiction of the court.

Ilelah, adjourned the case to March 25, for further hearing. (NAN)
