Gyan closing in on goal scoring milestone for Ghana

They played in two different eras and there was never going to be a time where their career paths were to be crossed until in recent times where the goal scoring exploits of one of these two goal poachers has come to the fore. Asamoah Gyan, the current skipper of the Black Stars and former Black Stars skipper Abedi Ayew Pele are the subjects of discussion here.

Pele made his debut for the senior national team in the late 80’s as a budding teenager just like Gyan did a decade ago. Though the ex Ghana star would genuinely pass for one of the most exciting players to ever emerge from the continent, the latter’s predatory instincts in front of goal has won him plaudits in Africa and beyond.

While the former has long retired from the sport, Gyan is still very active and in the prime of his career. An average of almost a half a goal from each of his 71 games (32 goals) has put him on the verge of making history as the highest goal scorer ever for the Black Stars. The maestro’s record of 33 goals from 73 games is on the verge of being equaled at least and almost obliterated at most.

Both incidentally come from football families with brothers who have had stints with the various national sides. Sola Ayew, Kwame Ayew and Baffuor Gyan readily come to mind though the maestro has gone on to add to the pool of talent three young and exciting lads in Andre, Jordan and Rahim for the Black Stars.

At 27 and still in his prime, you will bet your mortgage on Gyan’s name being mentioned in equal measure with the maestro’s, Eto’o’s, Madjer, Abega and co if not better in the very near future.

The young man who made it from Accra Academy Senior High School in Accra over a decade ago to the riches of Sheikh Maktoums’ Dubai will in no time have by his name the accolade of being the Nation’s top scorer of all time and that is only a matter of time.
