Enough Of The Concert Party; Arrest Sir John Now – Group

A pro-government group Inside Ghana is calling for the immediate arrest of Mr. Kojo Owusu Afriyie popularly known as Sir John, the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party for his conduct and utterances in the aftermath of the car crash involving his party’s 2012 running mate Dr. Mahmoud Bawumia.

Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie alleged at a news conference, a day after the accident that President John Mahama and National Security had a hand in the accident.

Inside Ghana, in a statement signed by Convener George Spencer Quaye, Secretary Eric Akomanyi and Director of Operations Alex Doe said: “Mr Owusu Afriyie’s pronouncements and actions make him a principal witness in this matter and the police cannot totally ignore him in resolving this matter”.

“Against this backdrop, Inside Ghana is of the view that Mr Afriyie must be arrested now to aid the police with their investigations”.

The group further said Mr Owusu Afriyie’s refusal to release the said vehicle involved in the accident to the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit of the Police for investigation must be treated as an act of “impunity”.

It said: “This action is criminal as it violates the Road Traffic Act; section 124. And by towing the vehicle without the prior notice of the Police, the General Secretary we believe could have tampered with evidence to ascertain the cause of the accident”.

“This action flies in the face of the traffic laws of Ghana and Mr Afriyie, an acclaimed lawyer should have known better”, the group noted.

The group said it believes “the actions and utterances of Mr. Kojo Owusu Afriyie [are meant] to compromise the on-going investigations of the Police which we believe could implicate the defeated Vice Presidential candidate of the NPP, Dr. Bawumia for dangerous driving and face a possible fine of not more than 200 penalty points or 9months imprisonment or both. (Road Traffic Act; section 1)”.

The statement concluded that: “Our call is intended to cure the disease of impunity which is rapidly gaining roots among some of our so called political leaders”,, stressing that: “The fact that you have no belief in the police service does not clothe you with special powers to act with impunity and ultra vires of the law. Mr Afriyie must be arrested now by the Ghana police service to ensure some discipline and sanity in our society. Enough of the comical concert party games”.
