Ghanaian actress Jackie Appiah won the award for Best Actress in a Drama at the maiden Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards, held in Nigeria on Saturday.

Appiah’s award was for her role in the Shirley Frimpong-Manso produced Perfect Picture. She beat Bubu Mazibuko (Man on Ground), Genevieve Nnaji (The Mirror Boy), Nolwazi Shange (Otelo Burning), and Funke Akindele (Maami) to win what was Ghana biggest award on the night.

The maiden edition of the AMVCA encompassed some 28 awards, some of which were voted for by viewers, and others selected by an industry based judging panel.

Voting begun on January 28 at 23:00 CAT and closed at midnight CAT on March 3, 2013. Viewers voted via WEB, WAP or SMS.

“We know that everyone associated with these awards must be diligent and conduct themselves with integrity during what are challenging, tough processes. At this time, I must also say that we are truly delighted with the list of nominees and we wish them all well. Roll on March, we couldn’t be more excited about the big night and promise TV audiences an event to remember,” the organizers said of the event.
