ABUJA—THE Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Monday described its victory during Saturday’s Kano State House of Assembly bye- elections as a litmus test for the proposed merger by the opposition political parties.

According to results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, the PDP polled 42,696 votes in Gaya as against the 2,379 by the ANPP and 53,895 votes the PDP got in Garko while ANPP scored 2,168 votes.

This was even as the Kano chapter of ANPP has rejected results into Garko and Gaya constituencies won by the ruling PDP.

The ANPP publicity secretary, Alhaji Nuraddeen Yakasai told newsmen in Kano that “we are not only rejecting the result, very soon the party will take appropriate action”.

However, in a statement by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, the party stated, ‘’the PDP had in a landslide victory in Gaya and Garko Local Government Areas of the state swept over 80 percent of the total votes cast, leaving the opposition parties to collectively scramble for the remaining less than 20 percent of the votes.

‘’The victory in the bye elections, is a clear indication that PDP is still the party to beat and a sign of weakness on the part of the opposition despite their alliance and much talked about mega party.

‘’The victory indicates that the PDP is still very popular among Nigerians, including the grassroots people in spite of the unnecessary attacks against its image by the opposition elements”.

“The sweeping victory in the two bye elections is a clear indication that the people still have faith in the PDP. It shows that the PDP is still the most popular party among Nigerians despite the much touted alliance and mega party.

“The results of the bye elections show that the PDP won over 80 percent of the total votes in the two areas respectively leaving the other parties to collectively scramble for the remaining 20 percent. It shows that the PDP is still the party to beat.”

The party then congratulated the Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwakwanso, its leadership as well as entire people of the state for the outcome of the elections. It aslo urged the people to continue to show support for the PDP at all levels.

Meanwhile, the ANPP said, “We are waiting for Gaya reports to be submitted by Senator kabiru Gaya and Garko report to be submitted by Hon. Kawu Samaila and then react appropriately. We call on our members to remain calm as this fraud will not be allowed to stand”.
