AS part of its social and economic responsibilities to its host community, Flour Mills of Nigeria Plc has concluded the last phase of its development project for its host community.
Specifically, the company, through the commissioning of the rehabilitated United Christian Primary and Nursery school, Apapa noted that it has committed N60 million in the promotion of educational and manpower development across the country.
The company noted that the development project was enhanced through a partnership with the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board and Apapa Local.
Speaking during the commissioning of the rehabilitated school, Group Managing Director, Flour Mills of Nigeria Plc, Emmanuel Ukpabi said the project, which is part of its Corporate Social Responsibility, is in part fulfillment of promises made during its Golden Anniversary celebration in 2010.
Ukpabi explained that the company had expended over N200 million in the execution of three key projects aimed at improving Apapa community and the welfare of its people.
“We are here to commission the renovation and rehabilitation of United Christian Primary and Nursery school, Apapa, completed by Flour Mills of Nigeria at a cost of N60 million. This project is a major investment in our Corporate Social Responsibility.”
The Executive Chairman of Apapa Local Government, Joseph Ayodeji said that at the inception of his administration, the community encountered many challenges ranging from dilapidated school buildings, inadequate classrooms, non-functional libraries among others; most of which he said has been addressed with the collaboration of the private sector of which Flour Mills is one of them.
He said, “among the few corporate organisations that partnered with the local government was Flour Mills of Nigeria Plc exhibiting abiding faith in our policy thrust on improvement and expansion of existing school structures and provision of facilities to promote conducive atmosphere for learning and at the same time upholding the concept of corporate social responsibility.”
Also, the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB Chairman, Mrs. Kemi Akinyele, urged the management of Flour Mills to adopt the rehabilitated school as theirs to maintain and prevent it from relapsing to its former condition.
