Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West, Ursula Owusu is ready to appear before the Privileges Committee over allegations she insulted the president.
The Coalition of Ghanaian Voters, led by Clement Apaack is leading the charge against the MP who they accused of calling President John Mahama as a thief.
They are asking the Privileges Committee of Parliament to drag the MP and leaders of the Let My Vote Count Alliance before it and punish them accordingly.
Apaack told Joy News’ Elton John Brobbey nobody has the right to make disparaging remarks at the president, least of all a lawyer and an MP.
He said the comments by Ursula Owusu and some leaders of the Let My Vote Account Alliance have the tendency of compromising the peace of this country.
Citing conflicts in other countries, Apaack said it is comments like threats of bomb throwing which gradually culminated into full blown wars.
He charged the Appointments Committee of Parliament to crack the whip on Ursula Owusu and her compatriots.
But the Ablekuma West MP is unfazed. She told Joy News’ Evans Mensah her comments were apt.
She said in a local parlance when somebody is caught stealing anything, that person is first called a thief; he or she is arrested and hauled to court.
She said she is convinced that the president together with the EC stole the 2012 elections; they have been ‘arrested’ by leaders of the NPP and who have dragged them to court on charges of stealing the elections.
On that basis, the reference to the president and the EC chair as thieves is not wrong, she argued, adding, “there can be nothing worse than stealing the people’s vote.”
Ursula Owusu said she is ready to appear before the Privileges Committee because she has nothing to hide.
She called leaders of the Coalition of Ghanaian Voters as attention seekers who want their voices heard in the media.
But the General Secretary of the PNC, Bernard Mornah, who is also a member of the Coalition told Joy News the MP’s comments were in bad state.
She said the MP cannot accuse the EC of stealing the 2012 elections when she benefited from that same so-called theft.
Did the EC steal the votes for her, she asked, adding such comments by the MP should not be tolerated.
