Ghana/Mali: Mali Defeat Ghana to Win Bronze

The Eagles of Mali on Saturday evening at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, defeated the Black Stars of Ghana, 3-1, to win their second consecutive bronze medal at the Africa Cup Nations.

A goal in the first half and two more in the second half for the Malian side saw the warn-torn West African country end their campaign in South Africa on a high.

Mamadou Samasa got the Eagles flying in the 21st minute as he slotted in the first goal of the game which started under the rain. Seydou Keita, after missing a couple of chances, doubled the lead as he netted his second goal of the competition in the 49th minute.

After Mubarak Wakaso had lost a good chance to get Ghana back on track having blasted a gifted penalty kick over the bar, the Black Stars still managed to get a goal late in the second half.

But that was not enough as Malian substitute, Sigamarry Diarra, deep in stoppage time, sealed the victory with a 90th minute strike.

The win sees the Malian team repeat the script of the last edition of the Nations Cup. Mali, in 2012, knocked out the host in the quarter final before falling in the semi finals and bouncing back to win the bronze against Ghana.
