Police probe mystery death of girl, 4

The Sofoline Police in Kumasi have begun investigations into a case in which a four-year-old girl was found dead under the bed of a 30-year-old man who is said to be mentally retarded.

According to an eyewitness account, there were dry foams in the nostrils and mouth of the girl when the body was discovered a day after she had gone missing in her house at Denchemuoso, near Kwadaso in Kumasi.

The police confirmed the incident and told the Daily Graphic that investigations were underway to unravel the mystery surrounding the death of the little girl.

According to the police, the suspect was yet to be arrested.

Meanwhile, all tenants in the house where the girl lived have been invited for questioning.

The Chief of Denchemuosor, Nana Ofori Sarkodie, also told the Daily Graphic that the girl was reported missing around midday on Saturday, February 2, and all efforts to locate her proved unsuccessful.

He said it was around 3.30 p.m. on Sunday, that he was informed that the body of the little girl had been discovered under the bed of one Atta Yaw, the prime suspect.

Briefing the Daily Graphic about the incident, Nana Sarkodie said moments after the little girl got missing, a search party started looking for her but could not locate her until the following day.

He said it was the family members of Atta Yaw who informed him that the body of the missing girl was lying supine under Atta Yaw’s bed.

Nana Sarkodie also said prior to the discovery of the body, the family of Atta Yaw could not find him so they also started searching for him.

He said around 3:30 pm on Sunday, one of the family members decided to take the mattress of the suspect to dry in a field, explaining that the suspect had been wetting his bed all the time.

He said it was after she had taken the mattress that she saw the body of the missing girl, lying under the bed.

Nana Sarkodie said the woman who discovered the body became hysterical, and her behaviour attracted some people who rushed there only to find the body lying in a supine position under the bed.
