‘3.35m victims of floods in 2012 in South-South’

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in the South-South region says that floods affected over three million persons within the region last year.

Within the period under review, the agency stated that fire incidents also affected 2,076 persons.

Mr Umesi Emenike, the South-South Zonal Co-ordinator of NEMA, made the disclosure in Port Harcourt on Friday at an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

His figure showed that a total of 3,353,210 were flood victims while 2,076 persons were victims of fire incidents in the region in 2012.

Emenike also said that NEMA would soon commence sensitisation on emergency management as part of efforts to minimise occurrence of disasters in the region.

Emenike said the sensitisation was necessary because of the vulnerable nature of the zone to disasters.
