The Nasarawa State House of Assembly on Thursday abolished 10 new chiefdoms created by Gov. Tanko Al-Makura, claiming that due process was not followed.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Al-makura had on Dec. 13, 2012 approved the creation of 10 additional chiefdoms, but the exercise did not involve the lawmakers.
Following the exercise, the Chun Mada of Akwanga, Nunku Chiefdom and Ngah Chiefdom were upgraded to first class status and seven others to second class chiefs.
The lawmakers described the creation of the chiefdoms as illegal, null and voi, and said that such an exercise was contrary to the laws of the state.
The position of the house is contained in a satement, signed by the Chairman of the Committee on Information, Security and Special Duties, Mr Mohammed Baba-Ibaku.
The statement said the governor’s action disregarded the legislative procedure.
The refusal of the state radio station to use the statement prompted the house to invite the General Manager, Malam Yusuf Abdullahi, to explain the failure to broadcast the announcement.
“This singular act exhibited by you, means you are not fit to head the station, saying the station belongs to the people of the state, and the manager owes it as a duty to disseminate information”.
Responding, Abdullahi apologised to the members, and said that on the faithful day they brought the announcement he was in Abuja for a function.
“As a human being we can make mistakes, I want the members to forgive me, with the assurances that this type of mistake will not repeat itself,'' he said.
The Speaker of the House, Alhaji Mohammed Ahmed-Musa directed that he should tender his apology in writing, in addition to he should use the statement on radio. (NAN)
