Damian Lewis led the way for British winners at the Golden Globe awards when he took home the Best Actor in a TV Drama prize for his role in Homeland.
The 41-year-old actor, who plays Congressman Nicholas Brody in the Showtime series, beat Mad Men’s Jon
Hamm, Bryan Cranston for Breaking Bad, Jeff Daniels for The Newsroom and
Steve Buscemi for Boardwalk Empire to take home the prestigious award.
Looking smart in his tuxedo, Damian made an emotional speech thanking his late mother as he accepted his award in front of the star-studded crowd.

He said: ‘I want to dedicate this to my Mum, who is up there somewhere looking down and bursting with pride.’
Damian also thanked his wife Helen McCrory for her support.
Earlier in the evening, the pair made a glamorous red carpet arrival for the event, with Helen looking incredible in a pale grey strapless dress.

Damian later credited the rest of the
show’s cast and crew for it’s success, adding: ‘Of course the best
journeys are always shared so I would like to share this with the best
TV cast and crew working today.’
As well as taking Damian taking Best
Actor, Homeland took home Best Drama Series and Best Actress in a TV
Drama for Claire Danes, who plays CIA Agent Carrie Mathison in the show.
Damian wasn’t the only British winner
of the evening, however, as Dame Maggie Smith, Daniel Day-Lewis and
Adele also took home awards.

Maggie, who did not attend the
ceremony, was crowned Best Supporting Actress, Series, Miniseries or TV
Movie for her role as Dowager Countess of Grantham in Downton Abbey,
beating Hayden Panettiere for Nashville, Sofia Vergara for Modern
Family, Archie Panjabi for The Good Wife and Sarah Paulson for Game
Change.
Meanwhile, Day-Lewis looks
increasingly likely to take home the Academy Award for his role in
Lincoln next month, after winning the Golden Globe for the movie.
As well as Day-Lewis’ prize, Lincoln was presented the Best Picture prize by a
very special guest in the form of former US President Bill Clinton, who
was given a standing ovation as he made his surprise appearance on
stage.

And despite knowing about Clinton’s involvement ahead of the ceremony, Day-Lewis admitted he was still awe-struck by his speech.
He said: ‘Even knowing it, it was
still amazing to hear him. I haven’t had a chance to find a corner
somewhere and just reflect on that moment when he spoke about our film,
and I was very honoured to have a conversation with him afterwards and
to hear his thoughts about the man about his achievements.’
Adele was another British winner at the star-studded event, taking home the Best Original Song award for her Bond theme Skyfall.

dress, Adele dedicated her award to her baby son, but declined to reveal
the little boy’s name.
However, she did tell reporters backstage: ‘I feel a bit over-excited; it’s my first night out since having my child!’
