Akpoborie charges selfish strikers to play for Eagles

SUPER Eagles former striker, Jonathan Akpoborie has told MTNFootball.com that Eagles’ strikers cannot afford to be selfish and wasteful against Zambia.

Nigeria faces champions Zambia in a must-win AFCON Group C clash today in Nelspruit after both teams were held to draws in their opening matches.

Akpoborie said that the Eagles front men were wasteful and went for personal glory and that cost Nigeria victory against Burkina Faso in their opening game.

“I am sure Keshi would have talked to the boys on why we didn’t beat Burkina Faso. In my opinion, the strikers were too selfish and they should not do that against Zambia on Friday (today) because this is the game from which the team could advance,” said the former Wolfsburg striker.

“As a striker you can be selfish only when you are clear on goal and when you have no better options upfront.

“They have to take their chances against Zambia because that will be the toughest game they will play in this group.

“And the added importance that has now been attached to the game after the opening draws will make it a lot tougher for both sides.”

Ikechukwu Uche and Brown Ideye had several chances to put the game beyond Burkina Faso but they failed to do so and thereby placed the Eagles qualification hopes in the balance.
