Harrison Afful has been impressive for the Black Stars at the Nations Cup

Ghana defender Harrison Afful says the 1-0 win over Mali on Thursday has provided the tonic for reaching the final at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

It was an improved performance after the four-time champions surrendered a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with DR Congo in their opening match in Pool B.

The versatile Esperance player lasted the entire duration in a left-back position and excelled.

Afful claims the victory which sent to the top will spark their title charge.

“We are not going to be swollen headed. The mistakes we did today (Thursday) we are going back to correct them and keep on moving on because we are here to lift the trophy,” Afful said.

“In our first game we couldn’t win. Though we drew, but we (players) were a bit down.

“Back in camp we were giving each other support because we put something in our mind that we have to win this game at all cost and the mentality helped us a lot.”

Ghana’s final Group match will be against Niger, who have been impressive despite failing to win a match so far.

The Black Stars need a win to consolidate their position at the top of the table and stay in Port Elizabeth for their quarter-final clash.
