Name, Shame And Prosecute Sponsors Of Terrorism—HURIWA Tasks Nigeria’s Federal Gov’t

A Democracy inclined Non-Governmental Organization- HUMAN RIGHTS WRITERS’ ASSOCIATION OF NIGERA[HURIWA] is not happy that several months after top officials of the State Security Service [SSS] and President Goodluck Jonathan promised to publish the list of suspected sponsors of the spate of terrorism attacks going on in most parts of Northern Nigeria since after the 2011 Presidential election, the Federal Government has spectacularly failed to name, shame and prosecute key sponsors of the bomb attacks that have resulted in the violent and cruel death of several thousands of innocent Nigerians.

The Rights group also faulted the anti-terrorism approach of the Federal Government of Nigeria for lacking consistency, focus and determination to tackle the bloodshed given the fact that the same Government that opposed the cassification of the armed Islamic Terrorists by the United States Government as a foreign Terrorist Organization [FTO], has through President Goodluck Jonathan told the Cable News Network [CNN] Christy Amanpour in a recent interview that Nigerian troops entered Mali to stop Boko Haram from constituted wider threats to the sub-region.

In a statement jointly issued by the National Coordinator Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko and the National Media Affairs Director Miss. Zainab Yusuf, HUMAN RIGHTS WRITERS’ ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA [HURIWA] said it was impossible to tackle the spread of terrorist attacks targeted at innocent Nigerians if the Government of Nigeria through the security agencies fail to expose the real sponsors of the bloody attacks and prosecute them for the crimes against humanity just s the Rights Group has also supported the clamour for the creation of special anti-terrorism courts to hasten up the dispensation of justice to all the suspected terrorists reportedly arrested several months ago without trial.

HURIWA stated that the slow pace of dispensation of criminal justice has encouraged the current regime of impunity whereby armed non-state actors are successfully executing innocent Nigerians without being stopped.

HURIWA stated thus; “Several months after the spokesperson of the State Security Service [SSS] and President Jonathan threatened to publish the list of terrorists masterminds and the real sponsors of the spate of violent attacks neither have these alleged sponsors named, shamed and prosecuted nor has the Federal Government succeeded in checking the spread of terrorism and other crimes against humanity that have continued to occur in the major terrorism flashpoints in Northern Nigeria.

In the spirit of accountability and transparency, President Jonathan must expose these sponsors of terrorism and charge them before the competent courts of law to be punished for the crimes they have committed against Nigerians.”

The Rights group wonders why the Nigerian Government that kicked against the classification of the Islamic rebels in Northern Nigeria by the United States Government as a foreign Terrorist Organization was the earliest West African Nation to send military troops to Mali under the United Nations mandate to defeat the spread of Islamic terrorism in the West African sub-region.

HURIWA also stated that President Jonathan has consistently being inconsistent regarding the best way to tackle the widespread terrorism that have resulted in the killing of several thousands of innocent Nigerians. HURIWA submitted that the Nigerian Government must be decisive and focus in the ongoing anti-terrorism war to save Nigeria from full blown anarchy.
